"Give a man a fish -- he eats today.
Teach a man to fish -- he eats his whole life."

The old adage describes my approach to lessons quite well. I feel a compelling obligation as a teacher to instill a sense of self-discovery within music. If musical concepts were like tools, I like to equip a student with the proper tools, teach them how to use those tools, and set them on a path of using those tools to build whatever they choose.

I'm very open-minded to styles of material, and though I will offer suggestions for music to play, I feel that it's crucial for the student to explore their own tastes and work with music that they already know they enjoy. Since the concepts I hope to instill are in most ways universal to all genres of music, they can be applied through just about any selection.

Lesson Policy

Lessons are 45 minutes, most often (and usually most effectively) scheduled weekly on the same day and time each week.

Lessons are $35 each, with a $5 discount when purchased in blocks of four or more (so for example, 4 lessons X $30 = $120).

Payment is expected at each individual lesson, or at the first of a cycle of lessons. I accept cash and checks (payable to Dan Costello). Other arrangements (such as PayPal) can be made on an individual basis.

I recognize how busy and turbulent people's lives can be. Time is valuable -- both yours and mine -- and a missed lesson is often impossible to reschedule. A missed lesson will only be credited if you inform me more than 24 hours in advance, or under extreme circumstances. I will also credit a lesson if I cancel one. If we can't reschedule for another time that week, I will add it the week following other purchased lessons.

Students are expected to bring their own instrument in good working condition, as well as a dedicated folder for music and lesson sheets, to each lesson.

Music is fun, and I feel it should be relaxing and enjoyable. It is crucial, however, that consistent, focused practice time is available to benefit from the concepts we discuss in lessons. Practicing even just 20 minutes a day, but EVERY day consistently, will have an enormous impact on a student's skill level, and ultimately, one's enjoyment of playing.
